Subtel Receives Four Proposals to Conduct Feasibility Study for Submarine Cable Between Chile and Antarctica
The Undersecretariat of Telecommunications of Chile (Subtel) received four proposals to conduct the feasibility study for the first submarine fiber optic cable between Chile and Antarctica, a key project to improve connectivity in the White Continent.
Undersecretary Claudio Araya emphasized that this initiative aims to “connect this territory through fiber optics to strengthen scientific research and enable significant contributions to knowledge from this region.”
The proposals were submitted by:
- Raylex-Ambec Consortium (Chile).
- TMG/WFN Consortium (USA).
- Salience/Pioneer Consortium (United Arab Emirates/Japan).
- Deloitte Consulting Limited.
Subtel will evaluate the proposals until January 8, 2025, considering optimal routes, risks, environmental impacts, and mitigation measures.
Project Impact
The fiber optic connection will boost scientific research and reduce the current dependence on satellite solutions, marking a milestone in connectivity and Chile’s presence in Antarctica.
