NUDOS and IMFD hold free workshop on misinformation focused on seniors
In Chile, 65% of the population uses social networks as a source of information according to the Digital News Report 2023. The list of platforms used for this purpose is headed by Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp. Although most of the information circulating in these virtual spaces is true, there is a percentage of unverified content -i.e. false or dubious- that contaminates public opinion and, in some cases, even endangers people’s safety.
With the purpose of providing tools and strategies for a group of people over 60 years old to learn how to evaluate content and stay informed, the Millennium Nucleus of Inequalities and Digital Opportunities (NUDOS), together with the Millennium Institute Fundamentals of Data (IMFD), organized “Disinformation in social networks: how to protect yourself from deception”, a unique and free workshop to be held in six municipalities in the country: Renca, San Antonio, Olivar, Requínoa, Santa Juana and Los Cerros de Talcahuano.
In this workshop, attendees will learn how to identify scams and fake news that arrive via Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram. In addition, the event will feature the delivery of informative material.
The only requirements are to be over 60 years old and live in one of the communes where the workshop will be held.
