Starting in December 2024, the Civil Registry will issue identity cards and passports in digital format, incorporating advanced technologies to ensure the security of personal information and data. Omar Morales, national director of the Civil Registry, announced in the public account that these new documents will position Chile among the top five countries with the best identification standards in the world.

The digital documents will be available from December 16, 2024, and can be obtained at all Civil Registry offices. These new formats, available through an application, will include security measures such as patterns, photographs, and live detection technology, ensuring that only the owner can use them.

The digital ID card and passport will facilitate numerous procedures and improve security by reducing the possibility of physical loss and fraud. Additionally, they will enable access to online services, electronic voting, digital document signing, and more, all from a mobile phone. The implementation of these documents will be voluntary and will complement the current physical formats.
