Entel to gradually shut down its 2G network in Chile to focus on 4G and 5G
Entel announced the gradual shutdown of its 2G network in Chile to focus on 4G and 5G networks. This measure, which will begin in the second half of 2024, will be implemented gradually to minimize communication problems.
According to the Undersecretary of Telecommunications (Subtel), until 2012 it was the predominant one in mobile networks, but with the technological change that panorama changed and became obsolete. In fact, today 2G has less than 1% of Entel’s mobile connections.
Shutdown dates by region:
- July 2024: Arica y Parinacota, Tarapacá, Antofagasta, Atacama
- August 2024: Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Metropolitan, Aysén, Magallanes
- September 2024: Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos
- October 2024: O’Higgins, Maule, Ñuble, Biobío.
Entel stresses that the end of 2G will allow a more efficient use of the spectrum and reduce energy consumption. The company offers a support plan, including free replacement of 2G phones, prioritizing users over 70 years of age and in rural areas.
The Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Claudio Araya, assured that the process will be inclusive to avoid the disconnection of the elderly.
