UC academic and director of the Millennium Nucleus on Digital Inequalities and Opportunities (NUDOS), Ingrid Bachmann, was called to be part of the new ministerial advisory commission.

After some weeks of uncertainty, the list of the members of the Advisory Commission against Disinformation, a group of nine academics including the director of NUDOS, Ingrid Bachmann, was published in July.

According to the decree published in the Official Gazette, the commission is of a temporary nature and will have the objective of “advising the Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation and the Minister Secretary General of Government, in the aspects that allow analyzing the global phenomenon of disinformation and its manifestation at a local level in Chile”.

The team is chaired by the Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, Aisén Etcheberry, and has a period of one year to prepare two reports on topics such as the impact of disinformation on the quality of democracy; digital literacy; disinformation on digital platforms; international good practices/comparative experience; public policies and disinformation.

Ingrid, PhD in journalism and expert in disinformation, values the opportunity to make the issue visible. “I think it is important to be concerned with the phenomenon of disinformation and to approach it from the empirical evidence on the subject and not simply from the impressionistic”, says the UC professor.

Although the formation of this Advisory Commission Against Disinformation generated some resentment in the opposition and some sectors of the press, in the first formal meeting of the commission, the academics clarified that they will not get involved in the contents of the formal media. “We have to make it very clear that this is not a commission on media regulation,” says the director of NUDOS.
